Meaning of name Jaggers
I think that Dickens meant the name Jaggers to sound mean, and like a tough guy. The name sounds like it is sharp and rough, and that is what i think the identity of this character can be explained as. As explained in the book Jaggers deals with the very dangerous criminals, because he is the tough guy that can take care of them. So the main reason of this name is to give the reader not only a stronger imagination about Jaggers, but to show that people should be scared of him."He seemed to bully his sandwich as he ate" (167, ch. 20), as said by pip most people are even scared of Jaggers when he eats a sandwich. This quote symbolizes that lawyers as also very hungry for power all the time, meaning that they need to control everything they are a part of.

I agree Jaggers to me is a play on the word jagged which indeed means sharp, rough, and uneven. This name also seems to indicate that Jaggers could destroy people by his words and actions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Dickens choose Jaggers's name to be sharp and uneven. I also agree with Maddie that it reminds me of the word jagged. In addition, Jagger's, for some reason, reminds me of daggers. Since he is such a tough person in regards to his job, and he keeps that persona throughout his day, his Dickens made the right choice in naming him Jaggers.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Jaggers sounds sharp and rough, which also describes his personality. On p.134, he leaves a bad first impression to Pip; bullying his co-workers. "He stood with this head on one side and himself on one side, in a bullying interrogative manner, and he threw his forefinger at Mr. Wopsle-". The similar word "jagged" means harsh, rough, or uneven quality. Another word "jag" means a sharp projection on an edge, to cut, or to slash. He can "cut" people not physically, but emotionally. When your body gets cut, it hurts on the outside, but Jaggers cuts your feelings with his harsh words and rude attitude, making it hurt in the inside.
